I am Shashank Bajaj, a passout from the 2008 batch of MPA branch. My overall percentage was 75 and had a dept. rank 5. I got placement call from Grail Research and McKinsey and Co. I joined as a Junior Research Analyst in Purchasing & Supply Management Practice in July'08 and worked for almost a year till May'09 before joining IIM Calcutta for MBA. At the request of the NSITonline team, I am sharing my college and placement experiences which will hopefully benefit my juniors.
I co-founded NSIT Motorsports with my batch mates Mayank Agrawal, Raghav Krishnan, Mayank Magoo and Pranay Sharma. We felt the need of a society dedicated solely to the field of automation engineering. Our aim was to be a challenging contender in the Mini Baja competitions and become a name to reckon with. I was the chassis designer in the team and also worked in the CAD and FEM departments. Also , as the marketing coordinator of the team, I was responsible for arranging sponsorship to meet the team requirements. I can proudly claim that NSIT Motorsports has helped instil the belief in students that they can pull off 'big' projects and triggered projects like solar car, moonbuggy, FSAE etc.
My approach during my college days was very clear. I set short term targets for myself and had my priorities clear, choosing for instance, Mini Baja work over CAT'07 preparation during Sept-Oct 2007. Mini Baja was more than a personal milestone, it was the starting of a tradition, and considering its overall impact, I felt compelled to contribute to the best of my abilities. I ignored academics ONLY once (VII sem) for the project when ignoring the project would have hurt the college more than myself.
I would also like to elaborate on the problems we faced and the potential pitfalls. The lackadaisical attitude of the college administration often lead to several delays which resulted in budget overshooting. The need for a better alumni network was also felt on several occasions, like getting sponsorship and technical guidance for the project.
The support we got from the college was phenomenal. We coordinated with different societies like Crosslinks, the Moksha and Innovision team to garner publicity for the project. Inter-department collaboration (GPS with ECE dept's help) also greatly helped our cause.
What is often underestimated is the guidance our teachers can help us with. Even now after college, I reach out to some of the teachers for help!
