1. First of all, Congratulations!

How do you feel, having received an internship offer from the esteemed establishment?

- Thanks a lot! It feels pretty amazing. The feeling hasn’t sunk it yet.

2. Can you tell us more about the internship? What is its duration and which department will you be working in?

- I’m selected as part of the CERN Openlab Summer Student Program. I’ll be spending 9 weeks at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. CERN is the birthplace of the World Wide Web and where the Higgs particle was discovered. The laboratory hosts ground-breaking experiments and is at the heart of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).

As part of the CERN openlab Summer Student Programme, I will be able to work with some of the latest hardware and software technologies and see how advanced IT solutions are used in high energy physics. I will also have the opportunity to attend a series of lectures developed for the CERN openlab Summer Students, given by IT experts on advanced CERN-related topics. Included in the programme are also visits at the CERN facilities and experiments as well as other research laboratories and companies.

My project deals with building a database structure and then assessing the data structure and usage of relational database features.

3. What are you looking forward to the most?

- The chance to work at one of the best research labs across the world is something that excites me the most. Also, to get an opportunity to live in a city like Geneva and the chance to explore many neighbouring cities like Paris, Milan, Zurich etc is fascinating.

4. Could you shed some light on the selection procedure for the summer internship? How did you go about it?

- I found out about the CERN Openlab Summer Program while searching for internships for final year students. The process involved filling up an online form consisting of questions such as my motivation to apply, work/social experience obtained, projects etc. Along with that I had to submit a Letter of Recommendation and my CV.

5. What all internships have you done in your time at NSIT? Looking back now, how did they help you?

- I have been involved in quite a few internships at NSIT. Firstly, I’ve been a part of NSITOnline for almost 2 years now. It has been a great experience working with some pretty cool people over here.

Apart from that, in my 2nd year, I interned at a startup wherein I worked on developing a Mobile App. I was also a part of the MIT Media Lab Design Innovation Workshop held in Gujarat last year. In my 3rd year, I spent my summer at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, California.

All these internships were related to the field of Computer Science.

I believe that doing internships is an important part of one’s college life. In my experience, an internship is a roller coaster ride that can offer you incredible career experiences and teach you some invaluable lessons. They make you more efficient, expand your responsibility and knowledge and can help you learn how any business, despite challenges can effectively get off the ground.

6. How did your time at NSIT help you in developing your interests?

- NSIT is a fantastic place and I couldn’t ask for a better experience than that. It has played a great role in who I am today.

Having spent four years in college, is there any advice you'd like to give to your juniors?

- “Don’t follow the herd, instead follow your passion”. I would not want one to start doing what the other person is doing unless and until it actually interests you. One can never know if you’re interested in something unless and until you try it. Try out various things and then stick to the one that you love doing every single day.

The team of NSITOnline wishes you all the best!
