Rachit Kumar

NSITOnline interviews Rachit Kumar, an Instrumentation and Control engineering pass-out from the batch of 2010. He talks about his placement interview with DELOITTE and his role in the Fests and Placement Committee.

NSITOnline: Could you enlighten us on the placement procedure of Deloitte this year?

Rachit: Deloitte had a written round followed by case study and then finally the technical/HR interview.

  • Written

The written test was similar to the Common Aptitude Test and the fact that I was preparing for CAT, did help a lot. We were asked 40 questions which had to be answered in 60 minutes. An advice for those who are not preparing for CAT is to practise Quant and Data interpretation, which would help in general, during the interviews and written for many companies.

  • Case study

This was mostly related to software/hardware. We were divided into groups and each team had an employee from Deloitte monitoring them. Their objective was to pick out people who took initiatives and contributed with innovative and progressive ideas to the problem posed. “Out of the box” thinking will surely get you brownie points.

  • Interview

In the technical part, I was asked some questions about C, even though it’s a consultancy firm; they sometimes ask questions related to C and DS as well. During the HR interview, I was asked what my hobbies are, which incidentally is cricket. So, all the subsequent questions were directed towards my hobby. I was asked about “attitude” and how it differentiated me from the rest of the candidates. I differentiated myself from others by highlighting my interest in finance, showcasing my knowledge of the market and NCFM (National Stock Exchange's Certification in Financial Markets) certification. It is an online testing and certification programme. It tests the practical knowledge and skills required to operate in the financial markets.

NSITOnline: Fests, they say, are the technological and cultural image of a college, please elucidate on your experience of organising Innovision?

Rachit: I was the chief convenor of Innovision. My experience as the convenor introduced me to leadership qualities. During the pre-fest organising period I faced various difficulties, which I had to tackle with poise and intelligence. One of the major difficulties was uniting the people into working as a team; since the people selected eventually for the final team were from different groups. I handled these differences by delegating responsibilities to each individual so that they feel responsible for their work and do not feel ignored. I also tried to get and value each person's contribution and credit them for it, in making the fest a success.

NSITOnline: What all did you learn with your experience as the placement co-ordinator?

Rachit Kumar: I think working as a placement co-ordinator was a good exposure overall and I learned how to convince HR managers and senior industry executives. I got valuable experience in terms of selling a brand name and marketing. I was responsible for getting companies such as Indian Oil Co-corporation Limited, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. and Adobe to recruit at NSIT. It’s a huge responsibility and people involved in it should not take it lightly. The effort made should be whole hearted and with full sincerity, dedication and honesty.

NSITOnline: Can we have any words of advice for your juniors, in-turn for facing the placement procedure?

Rachit: I’ll advise them to keep the following things in mind :

  1. Do not aim only for non-tech, prepare for both- tech and non-tech
  2. Revise the basics of C, C++ and DS.
  3. Go through the book “crack your interview”.

All the best!
